Heavy security surrounded the Beijing Olympic torch as it began the next stage of its three-month tour of China.
The torch’s nationwide journey has taken it to Xinjiang, a predominantly Muslim western region, and the Tibetan regions of China.
They are considered the most sensitive part of the route because of simmering discontent among local ethnic groups.
Police imposed particularly heavy security at the People’s Square in Urumqi, the regional capital, where the three-day, four-city Xinjiang leg got underway.
Prior to the start of the torch relay, organisers held a moment of silence for the Sichuan quake victims.
